Supported Independent living (SIL) is a category of NDIS supports designed to help you live as independently as possible, while building your skills.
NDIS-funded SIL arrangements provide assistance with tasks of daily life in a shared living environment, with a focus on developing the skills of each individual to live as autonomously as possible.
SIL arrangements can suit a range of people, including those who wish to live with friends or people they trust. They can include the support workers and the skill and capacity builders that clients may need to live in a shared setting.
SIL arrangements do not include board and lodging or other day to day living expenses such as food and activities, or the capital costs associated with a person’s accommodation.
Many NDIS participants with a SIL arrangement can also have a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) package, which covers the cost of physical accomodation. The NDIA encourages clients to select different providers for SIL and the SDA parts of their living arrangement to give them greater choice and control of their lives, reducing reliance on just one provider.
EmpowerU’s approach to SIL is unique, and puts clients at the heart of the process. Here is how:
An Individualised Living Option (ILO) is an NDIS support that lets you choose the home you live in and set up supports in the way that best suits you. An ILO is a package of supports that can help you live how you want in the home environment you have chosen. It’s not the home itself.
ILO supports provides you with living options on how you want to live, where you live and who you live with. There are lots of choices with ILO. You can share your home with friends or housemates. Or you might choose a Host arrangement or on your own with tailored support.
ILOs are funded in two parts. The first stage is all about exploring and designing the supports you would like. This will help you work out where you want to live, who with, what support you would need and who you want to provide that support.
The second stage is funding to put those supports in place. The supports depend on how and where you want to live and what you need. You can also include the support you get from friends and family, so everything works together how you want it to. The ILO support package can be changed if your needs change and will be designed to provide the safety, stability and flexibility you need.
